The International Forum on the Future of Constitutionalism presents a first-of-its-kind online course on "Modern Challenges in Constitutionalism: Perspectives from the World's Leading Experts."
This course offers an extraordinary opportunity to engage in live discussion and debate on today's major questions in constitutionalism with the following distinguished experts: Bruce Ackerman (Yale University), Carlos Bernal (Constitutional Court of Colombia), Rosalind Dixon (University of New South Wales), Menaka Guruswamy (Supreme Court of India), Ran Hirschl (University of Toronto), Vicki Jackson (Harvard University), David Landau (Florida State University), Mark Tushnet (Harvard University), and Mila Versteeg (University of Virginia).
Directed by Richard Albert, this course will confront the most pressing challenges to constitutionalism, including how to contain the rise of populist movements, what should be the role of courts in a constitutional democracy, whether and why constitutional rights matter in a liberal democracy, how the digital age will transform self-governance, and what theory and practice suggest a modern separation of powers requires, among other crucial subjects in public law.
Richard Albert will preside over every session. Each session will begin with a live presentation from one of the distinguished experts, followed by an open discussion and debate among course registrants and the distinguished expert for that particular session. Readings will be circulated in advance.
This eight-week course will be held live on Zoom on Wednesdays starting on May 20, 2020. Sessions will ordinarily begin at 1:00pm EDT and end at 2:30pm EDT. Some sessions may be held later in the day to accommodate faculty residing outside of North America. The Zoom details will be provided to all course registrants.
This course is open to all, including faculty and students in law, government, history, world affairs, and other fields.
The registration deadline is Monday, May 11, 2020. The modest proceeds from this course will be used to cover some of the costs incurred in developing this course and also to fund bursaries for elementary and secondary school students in Canada, Haiti, and the United States.
All registrants completing this course will receive a certification to that effect from the International Forum on the Future of Constitutionalism. No academic credit will be awarded in connection with this course.
Thank you for your interest in this innovative course directed by Richard Albert, William Stamps Farish Professor in Law and Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin.
