The International Forum on the Future of Constitutionalism presents a new online course on "The Future of Liberal Democracy: Global Dialogues with Leading Scholars."
This course offers a rare occasion to engage in live dialogue on today's major questions on the future of liberal constitutionalism with the following distinguished experts: Cora Chan (Hong Kong University), Gabor Halmai (European University Institute), Samuel Issacharoff (New York University), Bertil Oder (Koç University), Francisca Pou (ITAM), and Wojciech Sadurski (University of Sydney).
Directed by Richard Albert, this course will diagnose the current state of liberal democracy in the world and look ahead to its future challenges and prospects. The distinguished faculty will shine a light on specific jurisdictions, including China, Hungary, Poland and Turkey, will examine broad regional challenges in Latin America, and will moreover explore transnational themes in the institutional design of democracy and its responses to populist movements.
Richard Albert will preside over every session. Each session will begin with a live presentation from one of the distinguished experts, followed by an open discussion and debate among course registrants and the distinguished expert for that particular session. Readings will be circulated in advance.
This six-week course will be held live on Zoom on Wednesdays starting on July 22, 2020. Sessions will ordinarily begin at 1:00pm EDT and end at 2:30pm EDT. Some sessions may be held later in the day to accommodate faculty residing outside of North America. The Zoom details will be provided to all course registrants.
This course is open to all, including faculty and students in law, government, history, world affairs, and other fields.
The enrollment cost for this course must be received by Wednesday, July 15, 2020. The cost is $23.50 USD. The modest proceeds from this course will be used to cover some of the costs incurred in developing this course and also to fund bursaries for elementary and secondary school students in Canada, Haiti, and the United States.
All registrants completing this course will receive a certification to that effect from the International Forum on the Future of Constitutionalism. No academic credit will be awarded in connection with this course.
Thank you for your interest in this course directed by Richard Albert, William Stamps Farish Professor in Law and Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin.
